The Springs Croquet Club
About Us
The Springs Croquet Club plays the sports of American Six Wicket Croquet and Golf Croquet at The Springs Recreation Center in Henrico, County, Virginia. 302 Lee Ave, Highland Springs, VA 23075. The Springs Croquet Club is one of a few municipal clubs in the United States. Henrico County Recreation & Parks generously makes the court available, maintains the court year round, and provides top grade equipment for players' use. Users play for free.
The mission of the Club is to help manage and use the resources provided by the county to organize play, promote the sport, and teach croquet. The single greensward of short-trimmed Bermuda grass is slightly smaller than an official-size court, but plays like a championship challenge.
Croquet at The Springs Recreation Center is possible because the neighborhood association that once ran the recreation center sold it to the county in 1994. (Originally, the tract of land was known in the 1800s as "Woodstock," and later was the home of the Locomotive Club of Richmond, which built the clubhouse in 1925.) The croquet greensward replaced the swimming pool when Henrico County took ownership. And to those who come, croquet is more refreshing than a pool and much more therapeutic. Croquet is a game of finesse not a game of power because people generations apart, male or female, can compete on a level playing field. There are also pickleball and shuffleboard courts at The Springs Recreation Center.
Our Club members enjoy croquet together while sharing the sports we love with other players of all levels of experience. The Club's efforts to spread interest in croquet involve both children and adults of all ages. During the last two summers The Springs Croquet Club volunteers have introduced croquet to over 125 children at Henrico County sponsored day camps. The Club volunteers teach croquet to all interested players. The instruction is free.
Events designed to promote the sport, such as USCA National Croquet Day, are celebrated by members and visitors and actively supported by Henrico County.
